How to cancel a subscription you forgot you signed up for

Stopping using an app does not cancel the subscription behind it. This is not an accident — a free trial that auto-renews is designed so that forgetting about it is the default outcome, not a mistake somebody made. Finding the charge is half the job; actually cancelling it is the other half, and it's not always where you'd guess.
Where to cancel, by where you signed up
- Signed up on an iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions. This is where most app-store subscriptions live even if the app itself has no visible cancel button.
- Signed up on Android: Play Store → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions.
- Signed up on the company's own website: almost always under Account or Billing settings on their site, not inside the app itself — a common trap for apps that sell through their website but run on your phone.
If none of those show it, check your bank or card statement for the merchant name on the charge and search “cancel [merchant name] subscription” — most companies have a documented process, even when it's buried three menus deep on purpose.
Cancelling through the app store, when that's available, is usually more reliable than cancelling through the company's own site — the app store enforces the cancellation on the company's behalf, so there's no dashboard toggle that quietly fails to save.
