Is Venmo or Splitwise enough for splitting bills with a partner?

Venmo and Splitwise are genuinely good at what they were built for: a one-off cost between friends, split once, settled once. A household's bills are a different shape of problem — the same set of costs, recurring every month, that need to be tracked, not just requested and forgotten once paid.

What they weren't built to do

• Neither one remembers that rent is due on the 1st every month. Every payment request is manual, which means somebody has to remember to send it — the same person, usually, every time.
• Splitwise tracks a running balance, but it doesn't distinguish a recurring bill from a one-off dinner. Six months in, the history is a long list of individual transactions rather than a clear monthly picture.
• Venmo is a payment app first. It moves money well and organizes almost nothing — there's no sense of “this month's fixed costs” versus “what's left,” which is the actual question a household budget needs answered.

None of this makes either app bad — for what they do, they do it well. It means the job of running a household's recurring bills is a different job than the job of splitting a dinner bill, and it's worth using the right tool for each rather than stretching one to cover both.

💡The test: if you can name every fixed cost your household has without opening an app, a payment app is enough. If you've ever been surprised by what left your account this month, you need something that tracks the whole picture, not just individual transfers.
