The first month living together: a money checklist

The first month of living together sets habits that are much easier to start right than to fix later. Nobody has yet developed a routine, which means it is the one window where a new rule costs nothing to introduce — the second month, it's already a change instead of a start.

• Write down the actual split — rent, bills, groceries — even if you agreed on it verbally already. See it once in writing and there's no “that's not what we said” later.
• Pick a day each month for a quick money check-in, before the first bill makes it necessary. Starting it proactively feels very different from starting it reactively.
• Decide together which subscriptions are shared and which are personal, before a bill shows up that neither of you remembers agreeing to split.
• Agree on what counts as a shared grocery run versus a personal one, before the first receipt makes it an argument instead of a rule.
• Whoever's name is on the lease and the utilities, say it out loud — it matters if anything ever needs to change.
• Set up whatever's going to track the shared costs going forward, this week, not “once things settle down” — settling down is when the habit either sticks or doesn't.
• Talk about the security deposit split now, in case either of you moves out before the other. Easier as a hypothetical than as a live dispute.
• Agree that the first month's numbers are a draft, not a contract. Almost every household adjusts the split once they see a real bill instead of an estimate.

💡None of these take more than a few minutes individually. Doing them in week one, together, is the entire difference between a household that has a system and one that's improvising every month.
