Splitting rent in Austin

The ensuite is the whole difference
In a house where every bedroom is within a few feet of the others, an attached bathroom is the only meaningful asymmetry — and it is a large one at eight in the morning. Splitting purely by area will show four almost identical shares and will feel wrong to the three people queuing.
A fixed monthly premium on the ensuite room, agreed once, handles it better than any measurement. Households commonly land somewhere between fifty and a hundred dollars, and the figure matters far less than everybody having said it out loud.

The July and August electricity bill in a shared house here is not a rounding error, and it arrives after two months of everyone setting the thermostat differently. It is also the bill households most often split evenly by default without ever deciding to.
