Sharing an address is not the same as sharing a life

Roommate money has a particular shape: the costs are shared but the relationship is not, so there is no long-term account to settle things against. A couple can absorb an unevenness for a few months and sort it out later. Housemates generally cannot, and should not have to.

That makes two things matter more than they do anywhere else. The first is that the agreement is explicit — not because anybody is untrustworthy, but because an unspoken rule between friends turns into a grievance faster than a written one between strangers. The second is that the record is visible to everybody, so nobody has to take somebody's word for what has been paid.

The awkward cases are worth planning for while nothing is wrong: someone late on rent, someone moving out mid-lease, someone whose usage is genuinely different from everyone else's. These posts are about having those conversations before they are urgent.
